Hey friend, so you know when we’re chilling in those mom groups, and everyone’s talking about breastfeeding older kiddos? Well, they often bring up this thing called toddler twiddling – you know, when the little munchkins get all fidgety during breastfeeding.

Like, seriously, toddlers are into fiddling with everything – toys, keys, glasses – you name it. And when it comes to breastfeeding, that other nipple becomes their favorite button to press. Some stroke it, some twist it, some do a whole twiddling dance. And let’s be real, it can be a bit much for us.

Imagine if your kiddo’s thing was messing with your eyelashes. Like, cute for a bit, but a whole day of sticky fingers? No thanks! We’d shut that down, right? Yet, somehow, when it’s breastfeeding, we feel obligated to put up with it.

But here’s the deal – we need to remember our feelings matter too. This breastfeeding journey is like teaching them their first lesson in relationships, and it’s not just about milk delivery. It’s about setting boundaries and letting them know we’re people too.

And guess what? If twiddling bothers you, you don’t have to put up with it. Seriously, there are tricks you can try. Stick a cloth in your shirt for them to fiddle with, offer a knitted or silicone breast, or redirect their hands elsewhere – like, “Do you want my bra clip or your nose?” You got options.

And let’s talk about this “Don’t offer, Don’t refuse” thing. Saying no isn’t betraying anyone. It’s an opportunity to teach them about caring for others. Trust me, an 24-month-old can learn, bit by bit, that others have feelings too.

Motherhood isn’t about sacrificing our feelings. If twiddling makes you uncomfortable, end it. It’s a win-win – more oxytocin, better breastfeeding experience, and improved mental health for you. You’re not betraying anyone; you’re making sure you’re happy too.

So, mama, don’t feel guilty about setting boundaries. Toddler twiddling doesn’t have to be part of the deal. Natural-term breastfeeding is about more than just nutrients – it’s a chance to shape a little human full of empathy and kindness. Embrace that opportunity, and let’s make this breastfeeding journey a positive one for both of you!
